So I recently moved and instead of setting up my Red Sea max650 again I sold it and bought a brand new mega Matrix planet Aquariums 310. It’s a 96” Long tank. Getting all my equipment through Dave at reef trends. (He and Allen even came yesterday to help get it into my house!!) built the supports and table for my sump yesterday morning with Chalan. Thanks again Chris. Here’s a few pictures of where I’m at now. I’ll post updates and pictures as I go along. Going with all ecotech pumps and radion/T5 lighting. Reusing all my apex equipment. Going to have a sand bottom.

Pictures of the basement where the sump and all filtration will be. Still in rough stage but coming along.

So last weekend I got the slop sink installed with a little giant pump. Yesterday chalan helped me finish the ceiling and drill my return and drain line hole through the floor to get to the sump in the basement. I cut the pvc for the lines inside the tank. Then I dry fit the plumbing to the sump. (Don’t have my pumps yet- going with dual L2’s. ) of course BRS shipped me the George Fisher wye check valves. But unfortunately they only shipped one of the two I ordered so I couldn’t finish ?. Got the sump placed and I think I’ve decided to go with filter cups instead of socks. The sump with hold roughly 45 gallons of water. It has 3X 7” sock holders. Really like the layout of this sump. Has two areas for filter pad placement to keep detritus from returning back to the tank. My skimmer (on order Regal 300 INT) with fit perfectly into the second area. The third chamber will be for reactors and pumps for chiller/UV. can anyone explain the benefits of the cups over the socks? I’m guessing it’s just for ease of cleaning and the ability to add media into them??

My cesspool drain line is about chest high in my basement. So I have to pump water up to above that level so it will drain. From the trap at the bottom of the slop sink I ran 1.5” schedule 40 pvc into the pump which has a 2 gallon reservoir with a float switch. From the pump I ran 1.5” pcs again to a check valve and then a rubber T fitting with stainless hose clamps at each end (I found the pump was strong enough to push water out of the top of the traditional washing machine hose assembly). The water is supplied via tying into existing hot and cold lines in my boiler room run with PEX to the shutoff valves for the sink. I got the sink and pump on amazon. I bought the little giant pump and a complete kit for the sink. (Comes with legs, faucet, and trap plumbing) I screwed the sink to the wall so it can’t move around. I’ll take some pictures in a little and post them.

Right on thanks.

I was thinking of making up a slop sink but didn't really want to get into cutting up the basement floor to run a drain. With a setup like this I could put it just about anywhere and just pump the wastewater to the main stack.

If your drain is in the floor u can just use gravity to get waste water to it. But if it’s going to be a long run then this setup would work. You can’t underestimate the value of a slop sink when doing maintenance. I’m happy to share my adventure in setting up my tank. I’m trying to learn from my mistakes and those of my friends. I’m lucky enough to have great friends who come to help out and pitch in both physically and with sound advice. I can’t thank Chalan enough for his help. Dave at reeftrends has been invaluable. Top notch products at bargain basement pricing and he drives all the way to my house to show me the right way to do things. The guys u meet on this forum become friends and allies. Many more posts and pictures to follow on this thread. Thank you all for following along.

Got my skimmer and return pumps today. Popped the skimmer in to see how it fits. Perfect fit. Regal 300INT with the neck cleaner option. Returns in going with dual ecotech L2’s.

I'm envious of that neck cleaner.

It's probably one of the best investments with regards to water maintenance. IMO the best skimmer performance is in the 3-6 hours after the neck is cleaned, after which performance drops significantly.

I have a Octo skimmer as well, so I'll be interested in any anecdotes with regards to this particular neck cleaner as time goes on.
