Gravity fed, "external" skimmers are MUCH more efficient than "internal" skimmers. Your overflow pulls the nastiest water and surface scum from your tank. The most ideal thing to do with that water would be to dump it straight into a skimmer (the way externals work.) With a turbo or "internal" skimmer that funktified water is dumped into your sump, mixed up and pumped from there into the skimmer. The turbo models also use a larger pump to compensate for this inefficiency and also because the pump has two jobs: 1. Pushing water into the skimmer 2. Mixing it with air.

An external skimmer only has to mix it with air as gravity feeds the skimmer.

why is the non-turbo better?

Because there is less water pressure on the external pumps with no head pressure. As a result, they suck more air. The external models give you better control of the water level in the skimmer which gives you better contol of the type of skimmate you want (wet or dry). Turbo has a smaller footprint though.

the turbo is a great skimmer...and it is basically set it and forget it...no fussing w/ plumbing and trying to get the perfect flow through it etc. That is the appeal. I hear the turbo 1250 is a great performer...

I have an external deltec, but the turbos are great skimmers, don't let anyone tell you otherwise...

you just have to weigh the pros and cons...

the externals will perform a little better IF and that is a big IF you mess around w/ the plumbing enough to get the perfect flow through it...

the turbos don't perform quite as good as a properly set up external but they are still damn good skimmers and you can just plug them in and you are ready to rock.
