Shaun, did you find any research that states what concentration of sugar is too much and what's too little? For example, we have a safety zone of temperature, a safety zone of salinity, safety zone of PH ......

No idea Wingo, I would never put sugar into my tank.

Sucrose is bad in many ways, at least people could use glucose or fructose (not hard to get) since not all bacteria can break the di-saccharides bond of sucrose easily therefore, not all bacteria within the tank will be able to metabolize it.
